Week 2 Part 1

Certain forms of social media are geared towards personal use rather than anything else. In my opinion, these include Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter. Instagram and Facebook are both a format geared toward personal use because it involves certain aspect that automatically associate it with friends and family. Since these two forms of media came out it was all about following your friends, hence the name friends on facebook, so you can keep up with each other and comment on other people's posts. Social media's use in the past and now is a way to have a social gathering virtually in my opinion. Everyone updates eachother on their lives through pictures, comments and videos. Snapchat is also definitely geared towards personal use. This is because the format of snapchat involves pictures being deleted right away. If this social media had a purpose for something else like business it simply wouldn't make sense. If a business owner is trying to sell a product they wouldn't want to advertise something that deletes right away. It is a way for friends to send anything they want especially personal information because it is almost a safe place to keep secrets and stay private. Lastly, there is twitter which is just a chance to do the same things as Instagram and Facebook except with mostly words. It's a chance to give quick updates on life even faster without the perfect picture. All these are forms of social media that are meant for personal use.

Another purpose that social media serves is it can be used as a business platform. In my opinion the media that works best for business purposes is linkeden. It is a professional networking opportunity. It's a great chance for anybody looking for a job to get their resume online and have people take a look. Reaching a bigger population is always more helpful. In addition to that I'd say that youtube has become and extremely big format for people to make money and sell a brand. Today there are so many different vloggers and talented people involved in athletics or music making videos that have become extremely popular entertainement for others. This has led to youtube now paying those people if they have a big enough following. On top of that all these people on youtube are all building a brand for themselves. They have an oppportunity to make money from youtube and then they usually sell merchandise on top of that. There are even opportunities for fitness content creators because they use youtube as a platform to sell all that and more. More meaning they can sell there fitness programs and/or diet plans. There are so many business platforms out there besides these two as well that help people sell their services and products.

Overall, I have seen as times have changed that all these formats of social media have become a tool for both personal use and business. Instagram and Facebook both have ways to make a business page. They also are both able to have sponsored posts to get the word out for the brand they are trying to sell. There are ways to easilly attach links to a website or anything like that on an account to make it even more easily accesible. Also hashtags are helpful for business because they allow even more people to see. These are perfect ways to spread the word out of a business to many different communities. On the other hand, twitter is now used for even more. Twitter has been a big outlet for political conversations. I'm not sure if I would consider that business but also I wouldnt consider it personal use. I would put it under the category of excercising the freedom of speech. This is still another outlet that social media is used for outside of personal use. In conclusion, all these social media's started with a certain purpose but have expanded to do much more including giving more opportunities and allowing people to reach out to others across the world.

  1. It's funny because when I was trying to write this paper I was struggling to explain what platform is good for personal use. More specifically I found a hard time explaining why these platforms were better for personal use. It's easier for me to find reasons for businesses to use specific social media platforms, so it was nice reading your paper and remembering why social media platforms are considered social (haha). Nice post.

  2. Youtube has definitely developed a corporate side, along with its predatory algorithm and the growth of children on the platform has seen the personal side really dip into demonetization leading to many creators who do not want to make clickbait/barely 10 minute videos struggling for exposure. Youtube, I believe has the highest risk to reward ratio out of all the social media platforms, with most of the time being dedicated to crafting the perfect clicktrap thumbnail and title and getting yourself onto other peoples recommended.
